On Tuesday, March 1st 2017, we the
students of Good Shepherd International School from grade V and VI visited Cairn
Hill Reserve forest, just beyond Fern Hill on the Ooty - Avalanche road,
controlled by the South Division of the forest department, Udhagamandalam.
There we interviewed Mr. Raji the
guard. He was very cooperative and patiently answered all our queries. We also visited the plant nursery close
by. The types of trees planted so far
were Eucalyptus, Cypress and Pine. Taking into consideration the long term
effects of coniferous trees on soil erosion and global warming, the forest
department has decided to initiate the planting of evergreen trees (Cholai) in
these forests. The oldest trees planted in this forest are more than 100 years
old, with approximately more than 100,000 trees.
The forests protect us by giving us
fresh air and preventing soil erosion. Planting more trees and teaching others
about conserving forests is the sole aim of this activity. Though Mr. Raji was
not aware of the TREES model he explained that the forest department was
practically following the steps of teaching, restoring, establishing,
encouraging and supporting any conservation through their work.
Wetlands are the main source of water
for this forest. The management has future plans to protect forests by
expanding the planting of evergreen trees since the wetlands have all
evaporated due to extreme heat and lack of rain.
As a whole, this visit was very
enlightening. Not only did we learn that our Government is taking steps of
afforestation, but we also learnt that even the type of trees play a major role
in preventing further damage on the environment.

It is good to see that children these days care for the environment. I hope this learning experience will inspire them to take action and save more trees for future generations.
